Shared Living

Research Study

A research study examining social and affordable housing case studies in South Asia, focusing on how architectural strategies respond to informal settlements through spatial sharing and contextual sensitivity.

Date

January 2025 - March 2025

This research-led study investigates the complexities of informal settlements and the architectural responses that have sought to transform them into sustainable, socially integrated housing. With over 1.1 billion people globally living in informal housing—and this number steadily rising—this project critically examines how architecture can contribute to improving wellbeing, social cohesion, and economic resilience in vulnerable urban populations.

Focusing on case studies from the South Asian subcontinent—specifically India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh—the project analyses housing interventions developed over the last 30 years by governments and NGOs. Through detailed archival research and architectural drawing, it explores how these projects respond to their socio-cultural and economic contexts, with particular attention to spatial sharing practices, community-driven development, and long-term adaptability.

The research culminates in a comprehensive dossier documenting the selected case studies, paired with independent reflections on the factors that contribute to success or failure in such projects. This includes speculative insights into policy, materiality, participation, and architectural strategies essential for future socially responsive housing models. The study aims to contribute to the ongoing discourse around equitable urban futures in the Global South.
