Adaptive Reuse for Transitional Housing in Melbourne

Project Revival reimagines the Safe City Car Park in Melbourne as a transformative shelter for single mothers and children experiencing homelessness. Through adaptive reuse and lightweight modular extensions, the existing structure is carefully altered—retaining its concrete framework while introducing new vertical circulation, balconies, and scaffold-based rooftop dwellings. The design prioritizes flexibility, passive surveillance, and the integration of communal spaces to nurture safety, creativity, and connection.

Operable façades of steel grating create privacy while encouraging greenery, and day–night programming allows shared ground-level areas to become stages, night markets, and workshops. The architecture responds to economic constraints with low-cost, high-impact strategies: reused infrastructure, lightweight additions, and adaptable spatial divisions. More than shelter, the project offers a dignified platform for healing, growth, and social reintegration—proof that architecture can empower and revive.
